Protect What You've Worked For

Published October 6, 2026

Scammers are constantly finding new ways to target consumers, making it more important than ever to protect your personal and financial information.  Whether you're building an emergency fund or saving for a home down payment, taking steps to prevent fraud can help safeguard the progress you've worked hard to achieve.

What to Look Out For

Fraudsters often create a sense of urgency to convince people to act quickly. You may receive a fraudulent email, text message or phone call from someone impersonating your bank claiming that your account has been compromised or that immediate action is required. Their goal is to get you to click a link, share personal information or send money before you have time to think. One of the best ways to protect yourself is to slow down and verify the source before responding. If you receive a message that appears to come from your financial institution, contact the organization directly using a trusted phone number or website rather than clicking on a link provided in the message.

Watch for Common Signs of Fraud

Scam messages often have red flags, including:

  • Requests for personal or financial information

  • Threats that your account will be closed immediately

  • Offers that seem too good to be true

  • Unexpected links or attachments

  • Messages demanding immediate payment or action

When in doubt, just reach out. Taking a few extra minutes to verify a request could help prevent financial loss and identity theft.

Monitor Your Accounts Regularly

Reviewing your accounts on a regular basis is one of the simplest ways to catch potentially fraudulent activity early. Make it a habit to check account balances and transaction histories for unfamiliar purchases, withdrawals or transfers. This is especially important if you're using savings products to reach specific goals. Whether you're setting aside money in a savings account or exploring options such as a high-yield CD, staying aware of your account activity can help you quickly identify anything unusual.

Protect Your Login Credentials

Strong passwords are one of your first lines of defense against fraud. Avoid using easily guessed information such as birthdays, names or common words. Instead, create unique passwords that combine letters, numbers and special characters.

Multi-factor authentication can provide an additional layer of security by requiring a second form of verification before granting access to your account. While it may add an extra step during login, it can significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized access.

Be Careful When Researching Financial Products Online

As more consumers search for information about saving and investing, fraudsters sometimes create fake websites or advertisements designed to look legitimate. Questions such as "what is a high yield CD," "how does a high yield CD work" and "is a CD better than a savings account" are increasingly common online as people look for ways to grow their savings.

When researching financial products, make sure you're using trusted sources and visiting official websites. Verify website addresses carefully and avoid sharing sensitive information with unfamiliar organizations.
