VyStar Credit Union Announces New Vice President of Government Affairs

Published July 26, 2021

Jacksonville, Florida — VyStar Credit Union announced today the hiring of Matt Brockelman as Vice President of Government Affairs, a newly created position within the organization that will manage and coordinate strategy and relations at the local, state and federal levels.

VyStar pursues a wide range of initiatives with local governments and school districts that are relevant to its field of membership, and its recent expansion and participation in federal initiatives such as the SBA’s Paycheck Protection Program makes interfacing with federal officials increasingly important. Brockelman and his department will also facilitate VyStar’s involvement with industry trade associations and other advocacy-based groups as well as supplement participation in regional chambers of commerce and other civic groups.

“Because of our continued growth as a credit union, it’s vital to have a team member who can focus on building relationships in the public sector while also keeping a pulse on important issues of the day,” said VyStar President/CEO Brian Wolfburg. “Matt is a natural leader whose integrity and understanding of all levels of government will be a tremendous asset for our organization.”

Brockelman brings a fresh perspective to VyStar along with experience helping shape legislative policy. He was most recently a partner at The Southern Group, which is the largest lobbying firm in the Southeastern U.S. and specializes in state and local government relations for clients across all sectors of the economy. Prior to that, Brockelman served as a state lobbyist for the University of North Florida and spent time as a public affairs officer and mayoral aide for the City of Jacksonville. He graduated from UNF with two bachelor’s degrees in business administration (corporate finance and marketing).

“VyStar has a strong reputation as a trusted financial institution, but what truly sets it apart as an organization is the willingness of its team members to step up as community leaders,” Brockelman said. “I’m honored to embrace that responsibility within a new department at the credit union and look forward to supporting our employees, members and the communities we serve.”

In addition to his professional experience, Brockelman has a deep-rooted connection to Northeast Florida. He is involved with several local nonprofits including Family Support Services of North Florida and Teach For America – Jacksonville. Additionally, he is a former Jacksonville Waterways Commissioner and is currently an appointed member of the Jacksonville Downtown Development Review Board.

VyStar is hiring across the organization for talented individuals who believe in doing good in the communities we serve. Interested? Visit our Careers Page for more information about current openings.
