VyStar’s High School Branch Program Empowers Youth for a Strong Financial Future

Published April 25, 2023

National Credit Union Youth Month in April is an important time to reflect on the ways in which credit unions empower young people to take control of their finances and build a strong financial future. Credit unions have long been committed to financial education, especially for their young members, in order to set them up for success.

At VyStar Credit Union, we recognize the importance of teaching financial skills to young people early in life. That's why we offer our High School Branch Program at 19 different high schools. This program allows students to work in the day-to-day operations of our high school branches under the supervision of their school's career academy instructors.

Our High School Branch Program is designed to teach young people financial skills such as saving, budgeting and responsible borrowing. By participating in the program, students gain hands-on experience with key financial services like loans, credit cards, budgets and investment accounts. These real-life experiences not only teach money management but also provide valuable skills that can give students a head start in a future career in the financial industry.

To celebrate Credit Union Youth Month, we asked several participants of the program to share about their experience:

  • “Going through the VyStar High School Branch Program at Middleburg High School has taught me so many personal and professional skills. This program provides a safe and educational spot for anyone who chooses to be in it. I will forever and always be so thankful for this opportunity. It has taught me so many skills I didn't know I needed and sparked my inspiration to work in the business field. Throughout my two years here, I have had hands-on opportunities to improve my interpersonal skills and my business skills. Throughout the program, you get to build an unforgettable bond with the fellow interns, coordinators and teachers that will last a lifetime.” - Aspyn M., Middleburg High School

  • “This program has taught me important financial habits such as saving money, building credit and using lines of credit in a healthy way. I use this information constantly in my own life and as I help members, passing that knowledge forward.” - Lydia L., Clay High School

  • “Working at VyStar has impacted me in the best way possible. The VyStar High School Branch Program has introduced me to new people and helped me understand how to manage my money.” - Manal L., Orange Park High School

In 2022, VyStar launched its High School Debit Card Give Back Program.

We are proud of the impact that our high school branches have had on young people in our communities. Through our High School Branch Program, students gain valuable personal and professional skills, and we are committed to continuing to provide them with the tools and resources they need to make informed financial decisions and achieve their goals.

Beginning in 2022, we amplified that impact with the creation of our High School Debit Card Give Back Program. As part of the program, VyStar offers co-branded debit cards for each high school that participates in our High School Branch Program. Each time a co-branded debit card is used, we give 5 cents to the corresponding school, up to $10,000 per school each year.

VyStar also offers youth checking accounts to empower youth of all ages to begin creating good financial habits. It's another way we help build better, stronger communities for everyone.
