Turning Swipes into Support: How VyStar’s High School Debit Card Program is Changing Lives

Published September 19, 2025

For most high school students, testing is another step on the path to the future. An SAT on a Saturday morning, an ACT in the spring, an AP exam that helps with college credit. But for some, those opportunities come with financial barriers that can stand in the way of their dreams.

At Bartram Trail High School in St. Johns County, one student nearly missed a chance to take an important exam because her family could not cover the fee. However, because of funding from the VyStar Academy of Business High School Debit Card Give Back Program, school administrators were able to step in immediately. The cost was covered; the student was able to sit for the test and her path forward remained open.

That is the quiet power of every swipe.

Through the VyStar High School Debit Card Give Back Program, everyday purchases are transformed into powerful investments in education, equity and student success.

Real Impact, Real Stories

Since its launch, the program has donated more than $90,000 to 19 participating schools across Florida. Each time a VyStar member uses a high school–branded debit card to make a purchase, 5-cents per transaction is given back to the corresponding school, up to $10,000 annually.

These unrestricted dollars allow schools to meet needs quickly and compassionately.

“We use the funds to help students with scholarships, testing fees and even to support projects like a new electronic sign for the school,” Bartram Trail Principal Chris Phelps said. “It’s money that isn’t tied up with red tape, it gives us freedom to do what’s needed.”

More Than Dollars: Lifelines for Students

Participation is simple and open to all VyStar members. Whether you are a student, teacher, graduate or community supporter, choosing a high school debit card means choosing impact. Every swipe in 2024 helped fund:

  • Career & Technical Education (CTE): Welding helmets, uniforms and tools that prepare students for skilled careers.

  • College Access: ACT/SAT fees so no student is left behind.

  • Family Support: Meals, bills and care in times of hardship.

  • Emergency Housing: Shelter and essentials for students in unsafe conditions.

Principals describe these funds as more than just dollars, they are lifelines. Fleming Island High, Principal Thomas Pittman said the program has even helped spark school pride.

“We’ve installed wall wraps with positive messages and do bi-weekly gift card drawings for students doing the right things,” Pittman said. “It’s all about the students and the money goes right back to them.”

Award-Winning Excellence

The program’s innovation and community impact have earned national recognition. In 2025, VyStar received the top award in the Education or Scholarship Category in the Ragan Corporate Social Responsibility Awards, recognizing its innovative and impactful efforts to empower youth through financial education and scholarships.

A Legacy of Empowerment

The Debit Card Give Back Program is one part of the larger VyStar Academy of Business High School Branch initiative, which has:

  • Delivered more than 2,200 paid internships

  • Hired 100 graduates into full-time roles

  • Provided financial education to over 156,000 students

At these branches, students operate fully functional VyStar locations on campus, gaining real-world experience in banking, member service and financial education while preparing for their future careers.

Student-Led Storytelling

In October, high school students will compete by producing short videos showing how their schools put the funds to use. The contest transforms students into brand ambassadors and generates authentic stories that resonate across social media. Parents will also have a chance to compete in raising the most money for their child’s school through a parent branch contest.

“Our high school debit card giveback program is a way for us at VyStar to not only continue to do good and give back to our communities, but it's a way for the community to also get involved to help support their local high school,” said Michael Rathjen, VyStar Vice President of School Programs.
