Rediscovering a Jacksonville Treasure: My Visit to the Museum of Science & History

An exterior view of the Museum of Science & History

As a sixth-generation Jacksonvillian — yes, that's a word — I have so much pride in our city’s long-standing treasures, and the Museum of Science & History (MOSH) is absolutely one of them. I’ve been visiting since I was a kid, whether it was for summer camps, family outings or even as a nanny later in life. Stepping back into MOSH recently with a local veteran family brought back all those memories and reminded me why it continues to be such a special place for people of all ages.

Getting to experience it again through the eyes of this amazing family’s children made it all the more meaningful. Their excitement was contagious — touching, learning, exploring — and it took me right back to my childhood wonder.

One part that’s always stayed with me is the Jacksonville history exhibit. I’ve always been fascinated walking through that section, seeing how our city has evolved over the years. And here’s a little personal detail: If you look closely in the history area, you’ll spot the Drew Company, which is part of my own family history. Every time I pass the large image of it, I feel this strong connection to my roots and pride in being from here.

Of course, I can’t talk about MOSH without mentioning one of my all-time favorite parts: the Bryan-Gooding Planetarium. If you’ve never been, it’s a must-see. It is one of the largest single lens planetariums in the United States and the way they light up the dome to show laser lights, space scenes or the Jax skies is simply magical. Whether you’re a kid learning about space for the first time or an adult feeling that awe all over again, it’s always memorable.

What makes MOSH so incredible is how it offers something for everyone: space, science, local history, the human body, live animals — even a time machine feeling as you walk through the eras of Jacksonville. It’s interactive, educational and genuinely fun.

If you haven't been to MOSH lately, you should change that. MOSH is closing to the public on Sept. 1 as they get ready to build a new facility on the Northbank of the St. Johns River, so now is the time to plan an outing. Even better? VyStar members receive $5 off admission for up to four people. All you have to do is show your VyStar Visa® credit or debit card at the front desk. It’s a great way to make special memories while saving a little money.

Plus, keep an eye out for special, one-time opportunities through VyStar Perks. In honor of Military Appreciation Month, VyStar sponsored free admission to MOSH for members and the public on Memorial Day — and it was such a hit! If you missed it, don't worry. There is always something fun just around the corner.

I’d love to hear what your favorite part of MOSH is. Head over to my social media and leave a comment on the MOSH video — I’ll be sure to reply. Whether this summer brings you back to MOSH for nostalgic reasons or introduces you to something brand new, I hope it brings you as much joy as it did for me.

Stop by the MOSH to learn a lot and have fun this summer!
