New marriages, growing families and other major milestones often come with important decisions about finances, priorities and the future.

At VyStar, we see these moments as opportunities to meet members where they are and help them move forward with confidence.

That work comes to life through our employees, like Oakley, a Relationship Specialist at our Middleburg branch, and Sasha, a Senior Relationship Specialist at our St. Augustine branch, who recently helped members navigate important points in their lives.

Preparing for a New Chapter as a Family

Welcoming a new baby should be filled with excitement, not financial anxiety.

When expecting parents visited our Middleburg branch, there were feeling overwhelmed and unsure how to create much-needed room in their budget prior to their baby’s arrival.

They initially hoped to secure a personal loan, but when that option wasn’t available, Oakley kept looking for an answer that made sense for them.

“I didn’t want to give up on them,” Oakley said. “I wanted to find some sort of solution.”

By reviewing their full financial situation, Oakley identified they had an auto loan carrying an 18% interest rate. Refinancing the loan created an opportunity for immediate and meaningful relief.

The soon-to-be parents lowered their monthly car payment, delayed their first payment by 60 days to provide extra breathing room during parental leave and accessed additional funds to cover other expenses during the transition.

In a touching reminder of how personal these moments can be, the couple later made a special trip from out of town just to thank Oakley in person.

Starting Married Life on Strong Financial Footing

Another milestone brings its own set of financial decisions. After getting married, a newlywed couple visited our St. Augustine branch to open a joint savings account as they began planning their honeymoon to the United Kingdom and combining their finances.

What started as a simple account opening quickly became something more meaningful. A closer review revealed opportunities to better support their new life together. Both were still using basic checking accounts, so their accounts were upgraded to VyStar+ Checking, unlocking travel discounts for their honeymoon and credit monitoring tools to help them stay on top of their financial health.

The conversation also uncovered lingering wedding-related debt. The wife had placed much of the wedding expenses on high-interest credit cards with rates nearing 30%. This left her stuck making minimum payments with no clear end in sight. Working together, Sasha helped the couple explore options that simplified their payments and created a defined payoff plan. This turned short-term stress into a clear path forward.

The husband’s finances were reviewed as well, leading to thoughtful upgrades that reduced interest, added rewards and provided access to credit for future needs without unnecessary cost.

Before leaving, the couple shared that they rarely visit branches and worried about taking up too much time. The reassurance they received mattered. They left with a plan, a direct point of contact and the confidence that support wouldn’t end when they walked out the door.

“Moments like this remind me of why I work for a credit union,” said Sasha.
